Sometimes I hear about restaurants opening way before they even start hiring employees. And sometimes they sneak up on me.
Over the weekend, I bumped into my buddy Rob Bradfield, who told me about a seafood market and restaurant on Old Dallas Highway, which I hadn't heard about before he mentioned it. Curious, I went on the hunt Wednesday afternoon and sure enough found Friday's Seafood And More. When I asked Sharon, the lady at the counter, how long they had been open, she said "Good Friday of last year."
That's both pleasingly specific and an indication that it escaped my attention for way too long.
Anyway, Friday's serves Cajun standards, home cooking like pork chops and cheeseburgers and at least one item — Gar Steak — that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in town.
Gumbo is reserved for the special occasions of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Sharon offered me a free sample of crawfish etouffee, which I gladly accepted. I don't want to tell you what to do, I'll just offer that I'm going to back to get a bowl of that etouffee with a healthy dose of hot sauce added to the equation.
Club Sandiwch on wheels?
A while ago, Youndae Moon closed up his Club Sandwich shop, which was inside a downtown community center with the intention of rolling out a food truck. The closure came as a result of building repurposing and not because Club Sandiwch failed to establish an audience. It definitely had our attention. I was sorry to see the place close as he made excellent Asian tacos and banh mi, but I've been looking forward to a truck ever since.
Cory saw mention of the Club Sandwich truck on Facebook on Wednesday and I texted Youngdae today and learned he's hoping to open at the end of March or beginning of April.
It's going to be a treat when it does. An Asian-fusion food truck would definitely meet a need here.
The Club Sandwich page on Facebook features pictures of the inside of the truck and even an invitation to help name it.
